🪔 About

Guru Durga Charan Ranbir, an eminent Indian classical dancer and choreographer, is a leading exponent and steadfast custodian of the Deba Prasad Das gharana of Odissi dance. Born on March 1, 1951, in Kamaguru village, Khurda district, Odisha, India, his early life was marked by a strong inclination towards music and dance, despite initial family reservations. He received rigorous training in Odissi under legendary gurus Deba Prasad Das and Pankaj Charan Das at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar, also benefiting from lessons by Dr. Minati Mishra. He earned the esteemed "Nrutyacharya" degree and also acquired proficiency in playing the Pakhawaj. Ranbir joined the faculty of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in the early 1980s. Following the demise of his primary guru, Deba Prasad Das, in 1986, he emerged as a pivotal figure in preserving and propagating the distinctive Deba Prasad Das style, characterized by its powerful chauka, emphatic rhythmic architecture, and a blend of classical grammar with folk and ritual performance energies. He diligently reconstructed and taught seminal compositions while also creating new choreographies that remained faithful to the gharana's essence. In 1987, Guru Ranbir founded his own institution, Nrutyayan, in Bhubaneswar, dedicated to imparting the Deba Prasad Vani of Odissi dance. Through Nrutyayan, he has mentored numerous students, many of whom have achieved significant recognition nationally and internationally. His extensive career includes performances, workshops, and lecture-demonstrations across India and in countries such as the USA, Japan, Australia, France, and Germany. His choreographic works, including "Soma Mangalam," "Jagannatha Gopinatha," and "Aditya Archana," are widely acclaimed. Recognized for his profound contributions, Guru Durga Charan Ranbir has received several prestigious awards, solidifying his legacy as a torchbearer of Odissi. Awards & Honours: Padma Shri (2025), Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award (2014), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2005), Prananath Samman (2003), Chinta O' Chetana Rashtriya Samman (2002), Orissa Samman (by Orissa Press Academy) (2002), Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1998), Veda Vyas Award of Bhanja Kala Kendra, Top Grade Choreographer by Doordarshan, Outstanding Guru by ICCR.
