🪔 About

Pandit Girdhari Maharaj, a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, is an internationally renowned Kathak maestro of the Jaipur Gharana. He is celebrated for his virtuosic performances, innovative choreography, and profound influence on North Indian classical dance. Born into a traditional Kathak family of the Jaipur Gharana, he received his initial training from his father, Pandit Laxmi Narain Ji, and his uncle, Pandit Kanhaiya Lal Ji. He further honed his artistry under the tutelage of esteemed masters such as Pandit Shambho Maharaj, Pandit Jugal Kishore, and Pandit Brahmanan Goswami. Pandit Girdhari Maharaj is uniquely schooled in both major Kathak traditions, embodying the graceful and sensual elements of the Lucknow Gharana alongside the dynamic and powerful rhythms and movements characteristic of the Jaipur Gharana. Throughout his illustrious career, Pandit Girdhari Maharaj has created dozens of dance and drama productions, including notable works like "Sampurna Ramayan," "Ritu Darpan," "Damyanti Swayambar," "Geet Govind," "Urvashi," "Chandalika," and "Gatirodh". His performances have graced prestigious events such as the Bharat Mahotsava and international dance festivals in Japan, the Bharat Darshan program in France, and cultural programs in Nepal. He has also conducted numerous workshops and classes in countries like France and Germany. A dedicated teacher, Pandit Girdhari Maharaj upholds the "Guru Shishya parampara" (teacher-disciple tradition) and has trained many Kathak dancers who have established themselves in the field. After completing 16 years of advanced courses at the Jaipur Sangeet Santhan, he embarked on his teaching journey and founded the Kathak Kendra school of Jaipur. He is also associated with the India International Institute of Kathak Dance & Music and established the Girdhari Maharaj Kathak Center in Jaipur in 2018, with branches in Malviya Nagar and Nri Colony. His contributions to Kathak have been recognized with the title of "Varisth Kathak Guru" by the Ministry of Human Resources & Cultural Department, Government of India, and the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Academy. In 1988, he was honored with the "Rajasthan Shree" by the Minister of Information and Media, Indian Government. Awards & Honours: Varisth Kathak Guru, Rajasthan Shree (1988).
