Jayakamala Pandiyan is a prominent figure in Indian classical dance, specifically Bharatanatyam, known for continuing the esteemed Vazhuvoor style. She is the daughter of the legendary Bharatanatyam guru, Swamimalai K. Rajarathnam Pillai (1931-1994), a doyen among natyacharyas and a recipient of awards like Kalaimamani and Sangeetha Kala Sikamani. Jayakamala was named after the renowned dancer Kamala Lakshman, as she was born on a day her father was away for Kamala Lakshman's program, where he was performing nattuvangam. While her father, a busy artist, initially did not insist on her pursuing dance due to her health and his demanding schedule, Jayakamala Pandiyan has embraced and continued his rich legacy. She resides in Bangalore, India, where she actively teaches Bharatanatyam, propagating the Vazhuvoor style that her father championed. Her dedication to the art form ensures the continuation of her family's profound contribution to Bharatanatyam. Her daughter, Nrithya Pillai, also continues advanced training in Bharatanatyam and teaches, further extending the family's artistic lineage. Jayakamala Pandiyan is affectionately known as "Kamalakka" by some of her father's former students, highlighting her role in maintaining the connection to her guru lineage.
