Joyoti Das is an Indian classical dancer, teacher, and the visionary founder of Kalamandir - School of Indian Classical Dances in Melbourne, Australia. Born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, Joyoti Das embarked on her journey in Indian classical dance with significant early recognition. She was a recipient of a merit scholarship for two consecutive years from both the Government of India's Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Culture, New Delhi, and the Sangeetha Nrithya Academy, Government of Karnataka, India. While widely recognized as a devoted disciple and an outstanding exponent of Odissi, having trained under the esteemed late Guru Sanjukta Panigrahi, Joyoti Das also has a documented history with Bharatanatyam. She presented Bharatanatyam offerings in Calcutta in December 1986. Her formal debut solo Odissi dance recital, known as Mancha Prabesh, was performed in April 1990 under the personal guidance of Guru Sanjukta Panigrahi. On this occasion, Guru Sanjukta Panigrahi lauded Joyoti as "an outstanding exponent of Odissi who effervesces an aroma of sweetness and joyous spontaneity." As a resident performing artist and dedicated teacher, Joyoti Das established Kalamandir - School of Indian Classical Dances in Melbourne in 1992. The academy plays a crucial role in promoting Indian classical dance forms in Australia, offering regular weekly classes for both beginners and advanced students in Odissi and Bharatanatyam. Kalamandir is affiliated with the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria (FIAV) and Multicultural Arts Victoria, actively contributing to cross-cultural appreciation within Australia's multicultural landscape. Joyoti Das continues to be a pivotal figure in the Indian classical dance community in Melbourne, imparting her extensive knowledge and passion to a new generation of dancers.
