Kalamandalam Rajalakshmi is a distinguished Indian classical dancer and choreographer, specializing in Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi. Born in Aluva, Kerala, she was admitted to Kerala Kalamandalam at the age of 12, where she received comprehensive training in dance. She was interviewed by eminent personalities like Guru Gopinath and Mohiniyattam doyenne Sathyabhama teacher. Her training at Kalamandalam was under revered teachers including Sathyabhama, Padmini, and Leelamma, with Leelamma playing a pivotal role in shaping her as a Mohiniyattam dancer. Rajalakshmi also pursued a post-diploma course at Kalamandalam under Sathyabhama teacher. She was recognized with an 'A' grade by Doordarshan for her Mohiniyattam performances. Rajalakshmi holds a master's degree in Dance from Kerala Kalamandalam. Her career is marked by a pioneering role in institutionalizing Kuchipudi at Kerala Kalamandalam. On August 17, 1984, she became the first teacher for Kuchipudi at the institution, a discipline that was not part of the curriculum during her student days. She single-handedly developed the syllabus for the new Kuchipudi course and later updated it for the degree program. With over 15 years of expertise, she has performed in more than 500 events globally, captivating audiences with her innovative renditions of Indian classical dance. She is also recognized as a versatile choreographer of Kuchipudi. Currently, Kalamandalam Rajalakshmi leads the Nrithyati School of Dance, an institution dedicated to Indian classical dance. Her teaching legacy includes training numerous students, contributing significantly to the propagation of Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi.
