Kalamandalam Rajan (1931-2012) was a distinguished Kathakali exponent from Kerala, India, renowned for his mastery of the classical dance-drama form. Born in Ezhikkara, North Paravur, Ernakulam district, in 1931, he embarked on his Kathakali journey after being inspired by a performance of Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair Ashan. He joined the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam in 1955, where he received rigorous training from legendary gurus such as Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair, Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair, Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair, and Vazhenkada Kunchu Nair. He earned a diploma in Vesham, specializing in the Kalluvazhi sampradaya. Rajan's career as a performer saw him excel in various Kathakali roles, particularly the 'pacha', 'kathi', and 'minukku' characters. His portrayals of Bahuka, Nala, and Dharmaputra were critically acclaimed. He performed extensively across India and internationally in countries like England, Germany, and Tunisia, often with the Margi Kathakali Vidyalayam, Thiruvananthapuram. He also participated in the Kathakali Festival organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in New Delhi in 1993. Beyond his performing career, Kalamandalam Rajan was a dedicated educator. He joined the RLV College of Music and Institute of Fine Arts in Tripunithura in 1963 as an assistant dance master in Kathakali. He was promoted to head of the Fine Arts Section in 1972 and, after retiring in 1986, continued his association with the institution as a visiting professor from 1985. Through his teaching, he shaped the next generation of Kathakali artists. His significant contributions to Kathakali were recognized with numerous accolades. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2009, India's highest national recognition for performing arts. Other notable awards include the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Gurupooja award in 2006, the Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair Memorial Award in 2001, the Kalamandalam Karunakaran Smaraka Award in 2007, the Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon Memorial Kathakali Award in 2008, and the Kerala Kalamandalam Award in 1993. Kalamandalam Rajan passed away on June 14, 2012, in Thrippunithura, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of Kathakali.
