Kalamandalam Saraswathi is a prominent Indian classical dancer and guru from Kerala, celebrated for her mastery of Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam, and Kuchipudi. Born Saraswathi in Kuzhalmannam village of Palakkad district, Kerala, she began her formal training in classical dance at the age of 10, joining Kerala Kalamandalam in 1960. She studied Mohiniyattam under Thottassery Chinnammu Amma and Kalamandalam Sathyabhama, and Bharatanatyam under Guru Sri. Bhaskara Rao, graduating as a rank-holding student in 1964. Saraswathi furthered her Bharatanatyam education in Chennai under eminent gurus such as Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, Smt. Chitra Visweswaran, Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy, Swamimalai S.K. Rajaratnam Pillai, and Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan. She also trained in Kuchipudi under Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam and in Mohiniyattam under Smt. Kalyanikutty Amma. In 1972, she founded "Nrityalaya" in Kozhikode, Kerala, an institution dedicated to teaching and preserving classical Indian dance forms. Nrityalaya later relocated to its current Chalappuram premises in 1990, inaugurated by Kuchipudi maestro Vempati Chinna Satyam. Saraswathi began her teaching career in the early 1970s and has mentored hundreds of students over the decades. She has performed extensively in India and abroad, and in 1977, she married the renowned Malayalam writer M. T. Vasudevan Nair. Her performances are noted for their powerful Abhinaya and precision in Nritya.
