🪔 About

Kumudini Lakhia (17 May 1930 – 12 April 2025) was a legendary Indian Kathak dancer and choreographer, renowned for her pioneering contributions to the art form. Born in Bombay (now Mumbai), she began her Kathak training at the age of seven with Sohanlal of the Bikaner Gharana. Her extensive training also included tutelage under Ashiq Hussain of the Benaras Gharana, Sunder Prasad of the Jaipur school, Radheylal Misra, Shambhu Maharaj, and Birju Maharaj. Lakhia started her career dancing with Ram Gopal, touring the West and introducing Indian dance to international audiences. In 1967, she founded the Kadamb School of Dance and Music in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, an institute dedicated to Indian dance and music. Through Kadamb, she revolutionized Kathak by moving away from its traditional solo format, transforming it into a group spectacle, and incorporating contemporary storylines and expressions into the repertoire. Her notable choreographies include "Dhabkar" (Pulse), "Yugal" (The Duet), and "Atah Kim" (Where Now?), and she also worked as a choreographer for the Hindi film "Umrao Jaan" (1981). Kumudini Lakhia was celebrated for her innovative spirit, technical expertise, and ability to inspire generations of dancers, fostering an environment where students were encouraged to explore and develop their unique artistic voices. She passed away in Ahmedabad on April 12, 2025, at the age of 94 or 95.
