Madhavi Mudgal is a highly renowned Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and teacher, celebrated for her Odissi dance style. Born in Delhi in 1951, she was immersed in the arts from a young age, as her father, Professor Vinay Chandra Maudgalya, founded the prestigious Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in New Delhi. Her early training included Bharatnatyam and Kathak, but she ultimately chose Odissi as her primary medium of expression, drawn to its lyricism and subtlety. She received her initial Odissi training from Guru Harekrishna Behera and later became a prime disciple of the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, under whose tutelage her art was refined. Mudgal gave her first public performance at the age of four. She is globally acclaimed for her insightful choreography and her dedication to training new dancers. Madhavi Mudgal has played a significant role in establishing Odissi as a major classical dance form in India and internationally through numerous audio-visual presentations, concerts, and specialized dance festivals. In 1985, she conceived and curated 'Angahar,' a landmark festival in Delhi that brought together Odissi gurus, exponents, scholars, Maharis, and Gotipuas. She continues to teach at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi, carrying forward her family's legacy and shaping a new generation of dancers. Her performances are noted for their poise, depth, disciplined artistry, lyrical movements, architectural precision, and contemplative intensity. She also holds a Diploma in architecture and has contributed to several films and documentaries on Odissi.
