Madurai R. Muralidharan is a highly acclaimed figure in Indian classical dance, renowned as a dancer, composer, choreographer, lyricist, playwright, director, and guru of Bharatanatyam. Born in Madurai, India, he began his Bharatanatyam training at the age of seven under Guru Kalaimamani Chamundeeswari, a senior disciple of Padmashree K.N. Dandayudapani Pillai. He further honed his musical prowess by mastering mridangam and laya with Kalaimamani Sri. Madurai Srinivasan (Chenna Kutti) and vocal music with his brother, Kalaimamani Sri. Madurai T. Sethuraman. In 1978, Muralidharan co-founded the Nrithyakshetra Dance Academy in Chennai with his wife, Smt. Chithra Muralidharan, where he has since mentored and trained thousands of aspiring students globally. He is particularly celebrated for his prolific compositions, having released over 120 audio albums exclusively for Bharatanatyam, which are widely utilized by dancers worldwide. His compositions are noted for their innovative rhythmic patterns (thalams), melodies (ragams), and diverse themes, including entire margams in all 35 talas of the Carnatic Sooladhi Saptha talam system and jatiswarams in all 72 Melakarta ragas. Critic Subbudu recognized him in 2001 for ushering in a new era of composing varnams for the Bharatanatyam repertoire. Muralidharan is also known for his elaborate dance musical productions based on Hindu mythology, historical events, and Tamil literature, such as "Sivagamaiyin Sabhdham," "Silapathigaram," "Karna," and "Sanga Tamil." He holds multiple world records, including three Guinness World Records, for achievements like teaching the largest Bharatanatyam dance lesson, composing 25 varnams in 25 days, and leading large-scale virtual dance performances.
