Mavelikara Balachandran (1929-1995) was a highly esteemed Indian Carnatic musician, renowned for his mastery of the Mridangam and Kanjira. Born in 1929, he was the son of the distinguished Nadaswaram maestro Rathinam Pillai. His musical journey began at the tender age of five, when he commenced his initial Mridangam training under the tutelage of Ramnad Sankara Sivam. He later pursued advanced studies under the grand maestro Pazhani Subrahmanya Pillai, honing his percussive skills to a high degree of excellence. Balachandran made his debut performance, or Arangetram, in 1946. His illustrious career saw him serve as a Staff Artist at All India Radio (AIR), Madras, a significant platform for classical musicians in India. He started his professional life by accompanying Harikatha performances, which are traditional storytelling sessions interspersed with music. Over the years, he became a sought-after accompanist, providing Mridangam support to nearly all the leading Carnatic music stalwarts of his era. This impressive list included luminaries such as Madurai Mani Iyer, Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, the Alathur Brothers, T. M. Thyagarajan, Madurai Somasundaram, K. B. Sundarambal, and M. D. Ramanathan. He was also the regular Mridangam accompanist for the celebrated vocal duo T. Brinda and T. Muktha. Beyond the Mridangam, Mavelikara Balachandran was equally proficient in playing the Kanjira, a South Indian frame drum. He performed on the Kanjira alongside other legendary Mridangists, including C. S. Murugabhoopathi, Palghat Raghu, and Dr. T. K. Murthy, showcasing his versatility and rhythmic prowess. His talent took him beyond Indian shores, as he toured extensively across several foreign countries, accompanying leading artists and spreading the richness of Carnatic music internationally. As a successful guru, Balachandran dedicated himself to nurturing the next generation of Carnatic musicians. His notable disciples in the Carnatic music fraternity include Trichy Rajaram, K. Arunprakash, Neyveli Venkatesh, and Mannarkoil J. Balaji, who have themselves become respected figures in the field. Mavelikara Balachandran's profound contributions to Carnatic music and his role as an accompanist to numerous classical performances firmly establish him as a significant figure in the Indian classical arts. He passed away in 1995 following a road accident, leaving behind a rich legacy of percussive artistry and teaching.
