Mavelikkara Velukkutty Nair was a highly renowned Indian mridangam player and a respected guru in the realm of Carnatic music. Born on October 2, 1926, in Chettikulangara, a village near Mavelikkara in the Alleppey district of Kerala, his musical journey began at an early age. He received his preliminary mridangam lessons from his father, the esteemed Mridanga Vidwan Muthukulam S. Kumara Pillai. Demonstrating prodigious talent, he started his artistic career at the age of nine by accompanying his father in a HariKatha program at a temple. His formal debut, or arangetram, took place the following year, when he was just ten years old. His pursuit of advanced knowledge led him to undergo intensive training for a period of eight years under the revered Maestro Sangeetha Kalanidhi Padmabhooshan Palghat Mani Iyer, following the traditional Gurukula system. During this time, he was a contemporary and fellow disciple of other legendary mridangam exponents like Palghat R. Raghu and Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman. In 1959, Mavelikkara Velukkutty Nair embarked on a distinguished academic career, joining the Kerala State Government Service as a Mridangam Teacher at the prestigious Sri Swathi Thirunal College of Music in Trivandrum. He holds the distinction of being the first teaching faculty member in the mridangam department of this institution. His dedication and expertise led him to rise through the ranks, eventually retiring as Professor and Head of the Department of Mridangam from the same college in 1982. Even after retirement, his commitment to music education continued as he served as a Visiting Professor during 1984-85. The mridangam curriculum he developed is still widely adopted in music colleges across Kerala, a testament to his lasting influence. As a performer, Velukkutty Nair was a top-graded artist in All India Radio and Doordarshan. He had the privilege of accompanying four generations of leading Carnatic musicians, including stalwarts such as Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, G. N. Balasubramaniam, M. D. Ramanathan, D. K. Pattammal, D. K. Jayaraman, and M. L. Vasanthakumari. Beyond his mastery of the mridangam, he was also an accomplished vocalist, performing several vocal concerts where he was accompanied by maestros like Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman and Guruvayur Dorai. He was widely recognized as one of the few mridangam artists who excelled both as a brilliant performer and an exceptional guru, guiding a large number of disciples from various parts of the country. Mavelikkara Velukkutty Nair passed away on July 24, 2012, at the age of 86, in Trivandrum, leaving behind a rich legacy in Carnatic music.
