🪔 About

Moumita Banerjee is an accomplished Kathak dancer and educator, originally from India, who relocated to the United States in 2008. Her journey in Kathak began at the age of five in Calcutta, where she received her initial training in the Jaipur Gharana under Smt. Susmita Chakraborty. Banerjee's extensive academic background in dance includes a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) degree from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), where she was awarded a Gold Medal for achieving the first position. She also holds a Prabhakar degree and a Senior Diploma in Kathak, both with distinction, from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. Furthering her expertise, she earned a Master of Performing Arts (MPA) degree in Kathak dance, specializing in the Lucknow Gharana, from Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University, Lucknow. Her training was enriched by learning from esteemed gurus such as Prof. Kumkum Dhar, Prof. Bina Singh, and Prof. Ranjana Srivastava, and through workshops with legendary Kathak exponents like Pandit Birju Maharaj and Ashimbandhu Bhattacharjee. As a performer and choreographer, Moumita Banerjee has showcased her art at various organizations and festivals across India and in multiple U.S. states, including Florida, Texas, and Massachusetts. Driven by a passion to preserve and promote the traditional Kathak dance form, she founded the Tarana School of Kathak LLC (TSK) in 2018. As the Founder and Artistic Director of the Boston-based school, she focuses on providing a strong technical foundation in Kathak, drawing from the Banaras and Lucknow Gharanas, to students of all ages. Her students have performed for notable audiences, including the Indian Ambassador to the USA, and at venues such as the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. A notable student, Arshia Sharma, performed her Manch Pravesh with all U.S.-born musicians and singers. Awards & Honours: Gold Medal.
