Guru Mulla Afsar Khan is a highly respected Kathak dancer, teacher, and choreographer, recognized for his significant contributions to Indian classical dance. He commenced his Kathak journey at the tender age of five, receiving initial training from Guru Mulla Jafar Khan and Guru Pt. Rajendra Kumar. He is also noted to have been a disciple of Ashiq Hussain Khan sahib, who later established the Lahore gharana, and claims ancestral links to the Janaki Prasad gharana through his father. Rooted in the Benaras gharana, Guru Mulla Afsar Khan has graced numerous stages, performing extensively across India and internationally, showcasing a vibrant and energetic style. His performances often feature traditional Kathak elements such as Natraja stuti, Teen taal (16 beats), and Dhamar (14 beat cycle). Notable appearances include the Shaam-e-Awadh event in March 2020, the esteemed Lalit Arpan festival at the India Habitat Centre in Delhi, and the Uday Utsav dance festival organized by the Kaladham Foundation in Pune. As a dedicated educator, Guru Mulla Afsar Khan currently imparts his knowledge and expertise in Kathak at the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society (SIFAS). He has also conducted specialized workshops, such as the Kathak Dance Workshop at the HKUST Center for the Arts in Hong Kong in April 2019. His commitment to nurturing the next generation of dancers is evident through his disciples, including Sunena Gupta, who has performed at events like the New York Kathak Festival. He also choreographs for student showcases like "Shashvat – The Eternal Truth." Guru Mulla Afsar Khan is actively involved with the Kaladham Foundation, contributing to and presenting choreographies at their various festivals, further enriching the Indian classical dance landscape.
