Neelima Adhye is a distinguished exponent and senior disciple of the legendary Kathak guru Rohini Bhate, having commenced her rigorous training under the maestro at the tender age of eight. Her academic background is notably diverse, holding an M.S. in Mathematics from the USA, followed by an M.A. in Kathak from the University of Pune. Further demonstrating her scholarly engagement with the art form, she submitted a comprehensive thesis on Choreography and Kathak to the University of Pune in 1998. As a performer, Adhye has garnered critical acclaim from connoisseurs for her brilliant exposition of the Kathak style, particularly as developed by Rohini Bhate, and has graced numerous national and international dance festivals. Beyond her performance career, Neelima Adhye is deeply committed to her role as an educator and institution builder. She currently serves as the Director of the Nritya Bharati Dance Academy in Pune, a prestigious institution established by her guru, Rohini Bhate, in 1947. In 1995, she further expanded her teaching outreach by establishing Prakruti Kathak Nrityalaya, which operates as a branch of Nritya Bharati. Adhye is also a visiting lecturer at the Lalit Kala Kendra of the University of Pune, where she imparts her extensive knowledge. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes transmitting the unique technique of what is now recognized as the Rohini gharana to her numerous disciples. Adhye's contributions extend significantly to the preservation and promotion of Guru Rohini Bhate's artistic and intellectual legacy. She was a constant assistant to Rohini Bhate in her research endeavors in Kathak. She meticulously edited a two-hour film on Rohini Bhate titled "Laheja," produced by Nritya Bharati, utilizing archival material to showcase her guru's work. Additionally, Adhye created an audio disc, "Noopurdhun Pyaari," featuring selected musical and lyrical compositions by Rohini Bhate. She also compiled and edited Rohini Bhate's original Marathi essays into a book, also titled "Laheja," which has since been translated into Hindi and released under the aegis of the Raza Foundation in New Delhi. Adhye actively fosters the Kathak community by bringing out a regular issue of "Samvedan" magazine and organizing the "Samvedan Dance Festival," which features performances by leading Kathak dancers. Her own choreographic work, such as "Chaiti," has also been well-received. Through these multifaceted roles, Neelima Adhye continues to be a pivotal figure in upholding and advancing the rich tradition of Kathak.
