🪔 About
Nirmala Ramachandran, born Nirmala Viswanathan on February 9, 1936, in Mylapore, Tamil Nadu, was a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer and guru. Her initial training in Bharatanatyam was under Mylapore Gowri Ammal and Pandanallur Chokkalingam Pillai, with her arangettam (first public performance) taking place in 1947 at the age of eleven. She further honed her skills under T. Jayamma and T. Murthamma of the Dhanammal school from 1955 to 1963, and also received instruction from Tiruvalaputhur Swaminatha Pillai. Demonstrating a keen interest in Carnatic music, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in the subject from Queen Mary's College in Chennai in 1956, with advanced training from K.V. Narayanaswamy and T. Muktha. After marrying S. Ramachandran, an Air India officer, she traveled extensively, using these opportunities to propagate Bharatanatyam globally through performances, lectures, and classes. She founded her own institution, Nirmala Niketan, where she trained numerous dancers. Nirmala Ramachandran passed away on February 23, 2011, in Chennai, at the age of 75.
