🪔 About
Nityananda Das is a renowned Indian classical Odissi dancer, choreographer, and guru, celebrated for his extraordinary resilience and dedication to the art form despite a life-altering accident. Born on September 6, 1983, in Bideipur village, Bhadrak district, Odisha, Nityananda developed a keen interest in dance and acting from a young age, often participating in plays and dances during his primary education. Against his parents' wishes for him to pursue a different career, he left home to join a Jatra group as a child artist, where he met his first dance guru, Bimbadhar Das. He later formally trained in Odissi under Guru Bimbadhar Das and Guru Gangadhar Pradhan at the Odisha Dance Academy in Bhubaneswar, where he blossomed into a dancer of rare talent and stamina. Nityananda also explored choreography for Jatra teams, which proved to be a lucrative venture. However, a tragic road accident on June 11, 2000, resulted in the loss of his right leg, a devastating blow for a dancer. Despite the initial despair, Nityananda, encouraged by his guru Bimbadhar Das, found the courage to resume his dance journey. He began practicing again in 2003, gradually building his strength to dance on one leg. In May 2005, he made a triumphant return to the stage with his first post-accident performance at Rabindra Mandap, based on the theme "Pangu Langhayate Giri" (a handicapped person can cross a mountain). His ability to execute complex Odissi movements with a single leg astonished audiences and critics alike, earning him the moniker "one-legged miracle dancer". Nityananda Das has since performed nationally and internationally, becoming a symbol of determination. He founded Kalashram, an Odissi dance academy in Bhubaneswar, where he imparts his knowledge and passion to numerous students, continuing his legacy as a performer, teacher, and institution head. Awards & Honours: National Ability Mastery Award, State Redcross award, Super Ideal Award.
