Born on January 1, 1956, in Nityananda Leirak, Imphal, Shrimati Nongthombam Amusana Devi is a distinguished exponent of Manipuri dance. She received her foundational training and a Diploma in dance from the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) in Imphal. Further specializing in Manipuri Ras, she honed her skills under the tutelage of eminent gurus such as M. Amubi Singh, Th. Tarunkumar Singh, Th. Babu Singh, and Th. Suryamukhi Devi. With a career spanning over four decades, Amusana Devi has garnered critical acclaim as a dancer, performing extensively both within India and internationally with the groups of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy. Her international performances have taken her to countries including the UK, China, Japan, France, Myanmar, North and South Korea, South Africa, New Zealand, and Germany. She has also presented numerous solo performances at various dance festivals. A prolific choreographer, Shrimati Amusana Devi has created several dance-dramas, notably "Bidai Abhishap," which has been showcased at numerous festivals. She has also played significant roles in approximately forty dance-dramas produced by JNMDA, such as "Keibul Lamjao," "Wainu Paren," and "Meghdoot." Beyond her performance career, she is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of dancers. She currently serves as a Senior Production Assistant in the Production Unit of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal, where she actively trains young artists. Her profound contributions to Manipuri dance have been recognized with significant accolades. She was honored with the Manipur State Kala Akademi Award in 2008, followed by the esteemed Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2014, the highest national recognition for performing artists in India.
