Pandit Kalyan Das, a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Kathak, was born on October 10, 1921, in Nawapara village of Janjgir district, India. His father, Kushal Das-Mahanta, was a musician skilled in playing the Sarangi, and Kalyan Das showed an early interest in dance and possessed a sweet singing voice. His talent was recognized by King Chakradhar Singh of Saargarh (Raigarh), who was captivated by his dancing and took him on as a disciple. Kalyan Das received extensive training from several eminent gurus. His initial Kathak education was under Pt. Shivnarayan. He further honed his skills under Pandit Jayalal Maharaj Ji, Shambhu Maharaj Ji (focusing on three taal and beauty), Narayan Prasad Ji (one tal), Achchan Maharaj Ji (Bhava), and Lachhu Maharaj Ji (Abhinaya). Specifically, he learned 'laziness' from Achchan Maharaj, speed from Shambhu Maharaj, and sentiment from Lachhu Maharaj. Beyond dance, he also received higher education in tabla from Nathu Khan and trained in Khyal, Thumri, Tappa, and Ghazal from Haji Mohammed. Pt. Kalyan Das made his debut at the Allahabad Music Conference in 1936 and subsequently received accolades at various All India Music Conferences, including those in Meerut, Bareilly (1934), Raigad (1942), Delhi (1944), and Khairagarh. He was also recognized at the 1954 All India Music Conference in Karachi and Etawah. Alongside Kartik Ram Ji, he is considered one of the "two pillars" of the Raigarh Gharana, known for blending athletic vigor with rhythmic complexity. His performances showcased extraordinary command over Layakari (rhythmic play) and incredibly fast, crisp footwork. In 1964, he was appointed Professor at Indira Kala Sangeet University Khairagarh and also served as a Kathak dance teacher at the Chakradharnath Center in Bhopal.
