Raja Chakradhar Singh (19 August 1905 – 7 October 1947) was the Raja of Raigarh and a pivotal figure in the development and patronage of Indian classical dance, particularly Kathak. He ruled the princely state of Raigarh from 1924 until his death in 1947, succeeding his elder brother Raja Natwar Singh. Born into the Gond dynasty, his family had a strong tradition of art and music, with his father, Raja Bhup Deo Singh, also being a connoisseur of music. Raja Chakradhar Singh was a great patron of Indian arts, classical dance, and music, transforming Raigarh into a prominent cultural center. He invited renowned Kathak maestros and percussionists from various gharanas, including Jaipur, Lucknow, and Banaras, to his court. He himself received training in Kathak from gurus such as Pandit Jayalal Maharaj of the Jaipur Gharana and Acchan Maharaj of the Lucknow Gharana. He was also an accomplished exponent of tabla and pakhawaj. His most significant contribution was the establishment of the Raigarh Gharana of Kathak, a unique style that blended elements from the Lucknow, Jaipur, and Banaras traditions, emphasizing technical mastery, rhythmic complexity, and expressive storytelling. Raja Chakradhar Singh authored several important treatises on dance and music, including "Nartan-sarvasva" (also known as "Nartamsarvaswam" or "Nartan-Swargasam") and "Taltoynidhi" (also known as "Tal-Toyanidhi"), and coined new Sanskrit terminology for Kathak. He also composed numerous original Kathak pieces with thematic names like "Pakshi Paran," "Dal-Badal Paran," "Kadak-Bijli Paran," "Brahmbeej," "Madhu-Gunjan," "Megh Pushp," and "Chamak Bijli." His efforts revitalized the art scene in Raigarh, making it a pilgrimage for musicians and dancers. The Madhya Pradesh government established the 'Chakradhar Nritya Kendra' in Bhopal in his memory, and an annual 'Chakradhar Kathak Mahotsav' is organized to honor his legacy.
