Rathna Kumar, an internationally renowned figure in Indian classical dance, was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, in 1946. Her dance journey began at the age of four, and she performed her first formal stage performance at eight. She received her initial Bharatanatyam training under Kalaimamani K.J. Sarasa, her very first student, completing her arangetram in 1956. Her transition to Kuchipudi began in 1961 under Vempati Pedda Satyam, and she later refined her technique under the tutelage of Padma Bhushan Vempati Chinna Satyam at the Kuchipudi Art Academy of Chennai, with her Kuchipudi arangetram in 1967. Kumar also studied Padams and Javali under Mylapore Gowri Ammal and Kalanidhi Narayanan, and explored Kathak, Mohiniyattam, and Odissi, enriching her understanding of movement. After moving to Houston, Texas, USA, in 1975, Rathna Kumar established the Anjali Center for Performing Arts, the first Indian dance institute in Texas and one of the earliest in North America. She also founded the Sanskriti Society for Indian Performing Arts in Houston in 1994. Since 2002, she has served as a Dance Instructor at Rice University, teaching Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi as liberal arts disciplines. Kumar is a prolific choreographer, having created 36 productions and hundreds of dances, and is the author of two books on the fundamental techniques of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, titled "Adavu" and "Kuchipudi Adavu Sammu," which feature her unique dance notation. Throughout her career, Rathna Kumar has been a dedicated teacher, training over 3,000 students from diverse backgrounds. She developed a mirror-image teaching method and pioneered programs like "Talking Hands" for physically and mentally challenged children. Her contributions have been widely recognized with numerous awards in both India and the United States, solidifying her legacy as a performer, teacher, choreographer, and cultural ambassador.
