🪔 About
Roberta Arinci is a practitioner, dancer, choreographer, and teacher of Indian classical dance, primarily Bharatanatyam. She is based in Milan, Italy, and also in Athens, Greece. Arinci began her engagement with Indian classical arts over two decades ago (from 2008, placing it around 1988) while studying art history. During this time, she met Father Francis Barboza, a dancer and priest who utilized Bharatanatyam to interpret biblical narratives, becoming her initial guru. She continued her training with "many gurus" to master the technique and spiritual essence of the dance, and also pursued studies in Madras (now Chennai). Arinci is particularly recognized for her unique approach of integrating Indian classical dance, especially Bharatanatyam, with Christian themes and for use in liturgical services. She choreographs and performs both solo and group pieces for worship, adapting Bharatanatyam movements and gestures to convey meaning within a Christian context. Her repertoire also includes experience with other Indian classical dance forms such as Kathak, Odissi, and Kuchipudi.
