Sadhana Bose, born Sadhana Sen on April 20, 1914, in Kolkata (then Calcutta), India, was a highly renowned Indian actress and dancer. She hailed from a prominent Brahmo family, being the granddaughter of social reformer Keshab Chandra Sen. Her formal dance training encompassed Kathak, under the tutelage of Taraknath Bagchi, and Manipuri, under Guru Senarik Rajkumar. Additionally, she pursued studies in music and piano. Bose distinguished herself through her innovative dance performances, which skillfully blended classical Indian forms with Western ballet, and for her unique "Bengali Modern Dance." Her artistic journey began early, with participation in ballets supervised by Rabindranath Tagore. A significant early influence was her brief collaboration with the Russian prima ballerina Anna Pavlova in 1929, where she assisted in imparting dance techniques. Her career flourished in early Bengali and Hindi cinema. She gained widespread recognition with her debut in the Bengali film *Alibaba* (1937) and went on to star in several successful productions, including *Kumkum* (1940), *Raj Nartaki* (1941), and *Meenakshi* (1942). In these films, she often played lead roles that showcased her elaborate dance sequences. Beyond cinema, Sadhana Bose was a prolific choreographer and staged numerous ballets in Kolkata. Notably, her ballet *Bhookh* (1943) addressed the devastating Bengal famine, demonstrating her commitment to thematic depth in performance art. She also formed her own dance troupe, undertaking all-India tours with various plays. Towards the end of her life, she contributed as a dance trainer at Calcutta's prestigious Star Theatre. Sadhana Bose passed away on October 3, 1973.
