🪔 About
Savithri Naidoo is a prominent figure in Indian classical dance, recognized as the founder and artistic director of the Vadhini Indian Arts Academy in Cape Town, South Africa. As a senior student of dance guru Indira Rajan, Naidoo has dedicated over four decades to teaching and promoting Indian classical arts, having commenced her teaching career and established her academy in 1979. Her Vadhini Indian Arts Academy holds the distinction of being the first Indian dance academy in the Cape Province. Naidoo has been instrumental in structuring an innovative dance course that incorporates grades, external practical examinations, theory, and a variety of workshops led by experts. Her efforts, alongside those of other dance practitioners, have led to Bharatanatyam being recognized as a school subject in South Africa, available up to Matriculation level. Naidoo is known for her commitment to cross-cultural expression, taking Indian arts beyond the confines of the Indian community to include fusion dance forms. She has also worked with physically disabled children and adults, demonstrating her inclusive approach to dance education. Her academy showcases traditional Bharatanatyam performances, often accompanied by live music, and has a track record of staging both community-oriented events and large-scale international performances. Naidoo's work has significantly increased the awareness and understanding of Indian classical dance in South Africa.
