Shashwati Garai Ghosh is a leading Indian classical Odissi dancer, choreographer, and teacher, recognized for her powerful and elegant performances. Born into a family of artists, with her father Tarak Garai being a sculptor and her mother Minakshi Garai a painter, she began her Odissi lessons in 1999 under the tutelage of eminent dancer-choreographer Smt. Sharmila Biswas. She also received special training from legendary gurus such as Kelucharan Mohapatra, Kalanidhi Narayanan, Sonal Mansingh, and Durgacharan Ranbir. Shashwati Garai Ghosh pursued formal education in dance, completing her MA in Odishi dance from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, where she had enrolled in a pre-degree course in 1998. Her career as a performer has seen her travel extensively across India and internationally, giving notable performances at prestigious festivals like the Konark Festival, Mukteshwar Festival, and Ananya Festival in India, as well as in Toronto, Washington, and Singapore. She is known for her solo performances and her ability to weave intricate narratives through her dance. Beyond performing, Shashwati Garai Ghosh is dedicated to teaching and nurturing the next generation of Odissi dancers. She began teaching senior classes at her guru's institute soon after 2005 and established her own Odissi dance institute, Angashuddhi - Home for Odishi, in Kolkata in 2006, formally setting it up in 2012. Through Angashuddhi, she conducts workshops and trains students, focusing on technical precision, expressive dimensions, and a holistic understanding of the dance form. She also engages in choreographic work, creating pieces like "Vriddhi" and curating events that showcase her students.
