🪔 About

T.M. Arunachalam was a celebrated guru and performer of Bharatanatyam, deeply rooted in the Pandanallur style. He received his training from the eminent Pandanallur Meenakshisundaram Pillai, a foundational figure in the development of this classical dance form. Arunachalam dedicated his life to performing and teaching, significantly contributing to the propagation of Bharatanatyam. He founded the Sri Shanmugananda Natya Palli, an institution that played a crucial role in nurturing new talent. His teaching legacy is extensive, with his disciples and their students establishing dance schools and performing globally. Among his notable students, he groomed well-known dancers such as Hemamalini. T.M. Arunachalam also came from a family deeply involved in the arts; his three sons, Hemnath, Natarajan, and Chandrashekar, followed in his footsteps. Hemnath became a nattuvanar, Natarajan a mridangist who later served as Principal of a Music College, and Chandrashekar a senior lecturer of mridangam at Annamalai University. His contributions to Indian classical dance were recognized through celebrations of his birth centenary by the classical dance community.
