🪔 About

Shrimati Urmika Maibam was born on February 14, 1985, in Imphal, Manipur, India. She is a distinguished Indian classical dancer, primarily known for her expertise in Manipuri dance. Maibam received extensive training in Manipuri dance from Shrimati Irengbam Nalini Devi and Shrimati Darshana Jhaveri. She also pursued a post-graduation in Choreography from the Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography under the tutelage of Shrimati Maya Rao. Additionally, she has learned Bharatanatyam from Shrimati Suparna Sai Venkatesh. Maibam completed a 9-year course in Manipuri Dance from the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal, where she was awarded a Merit Scholarship. She holds a Ph.D. in Performing Art and has been awarded a Junior Fellowship in Manipuri Dance from the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT), Government of India. Urmika Maibam is an 'A' Grade artist of Prasar Bharti and has performed widely across India and internationally, including in Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Myanmar, and New Zealand. She is currently a faculty member in the Department of Dance at Manipur University of Culture, Imphal, a position she has held since 2018. In 2026, she also joined Visva Bharati as an Assistant Professor of Manipuri Dance in the Department of Rabindra Sangit Dance and Drama. Maibam is also a choreographer, having directed a regional Manipuri feature film titled 'Tamphamani' and choreographed works like 'Maibi Jagoi'. Her research contributions include articles such as 'Raas Leela – A Devotional Dance' and 'Raas Leela – From Mandap to Proscenium Stage'. Awards & Honours: Manipur State Kala Young Talent Award, Maisnam (O) Ibetombi Devi Memorial Gold Medal, Shrimati Usha Devi Gold Medal, Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar (2022), Young Talent Award Recipient, Junior Fellowship, Swami Vivekananda International Award, Rabindranath Tagore National Award, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Award (2016), National Choreographer Award (2016).
