Vidya Chandrasekhar, also known as "Diya," is a Canadian-born Bharatanatyam dancer, educator, and musical performer. She represents the next generation in a distinguished lineage of dancers and musicians from India, being the daughter of "Natya Veda Bharati" Smt. Sudha ChandraSekhar (formerly Sudha Doraiswamy). Vidya underwent rigorous and extensive training across two continents, studying under the Grand Masters of the Tiruvidaimarudur technique from Sri Rajarajeshwari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir, including the esteemed late T.K. Mahalingam Pillai. Her expansive repertoire encompasses over 500 traditional items, ranging from abhinaya-intensive pieces popularized by legends such as Balasaraswati in the 1950s to innovative nritta-technique numbers researched and staged by her mother in the 1950s and 1960s. She is committed to the ongoing study of Natya Yoga and Sangeetha Shastra. Chandrasekhar holds two World Records for Longest Solo Classical Dance Performance, through which she has successfully fundraised thousands of dollars for organizations like the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. Notably, her 72-hour dance marathon in 1996 alone raised over $30,000 for the American Heart Association. As an advanced dance educator, she teaches advanced Bharatanatyam practitioners in the Seattle area through From Within Dance Academy and conducts online classes, including the "100 Padam Challenge." Her dedication to dance as a service extends to teaching Bharatanatyam at the Detroit Day School for the Deaf and assisting youngsters in finding focus through meditation-infused Bharatanatyam exercises. Inspired by Buddhist philosophies, Vidya has consciously shifted her focus from stage performance to utilizing dance as a means of service and fostering awareness. She also holds the role of VP of Operations at Nritya Sudha's Hindu Temple Rhythms, an institution founded by her maternal grandparents in 1958, where her mother serves as Artistic Director.
