Sudha Chandrasekhar is a highly renowned Indian classical dancer, guru, choreographer, and institution head, primarily known for her mastery of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Born in 1940, she began her classical dance training in Manipuri and Kathak in 1943 at the Rupatayan Institute in Bombay, India. From 1945, she intensively studied Bharatanatyam under esteemed gurus including Sri Thiruvadamaradur Kuppiah Pillai, Guru A.T. Govindraj Pillai, Srimati Karunambal, Guru T.K. Mahalingam Pillai, and Guru K. Kalyanasundaram of the Sri Rajarajeshwari Bharata Natya Kalamandir, specializing in the Tanjore style. She also pursued advanced training in Kathak under Gurus Srivastava and Gopikrishna, Kuchipudi under Guru Korada Narasimha Rao, Bharatacharya Sri Rama Acharyulu, and at Darpana Institute, a short-term course in Odissi under Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, and Kathakali under Guru Krishna Pannikar. Additionally, she undertook intensive studies in Carnatic music under Bhaskara Bhagavathar and Vidwan Trichi Swaminatha Bhagavathar, and Hindustani classical music under Professor Ginde. Chandrasekhar gained significant fame in the 1960s for her revival of ancient Kavuthvams and her devotional abhinaya in works like "Nritya Gitanjali" and Guru Mahalingam Pillai's "Dashavataram." She performed for dignitaries including Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1967, she moved to Canada and later to Michigan, USA, in 1977, where she established herself as a leading exponent of Indian classical dance in North America. She founded "Nritya Sudha's Hindu Temple Rhythms" in the decade following 1978 to preserve and propagate Indian classical arts, and also directs the "Vidyanjali Dance Troupe of Michigan ensemble." She has given approximately 7,000 performances globally and has presented over 125 students in their Bharatanatyam Arangetrams. Chandrasekhar has also taught at institutions such as the University of Windsor, Wayne State University, Albion College, and the University of Michigan.
