Aloka Panikar was born on November 26, 1940, in Chittagong, present-day Bangladesh, to Nirendra Kumar Bhattacharjea and Karunamayi Devi. Initially nicknamed 'Aalo' for her radiant presence, she overcame childhood illnesses to pursue her passion for dance. Her formal training began in the mid-1950s at Valmiki Banerjee's school, where she was exposed to a diverse range of Indian classical dance forms including Kathakali, Mohiniattam, Bharatanatyam, and Manipuri. She further honed her skills under Guru Gopinath at Bharatiya Kala Kendra, where her talent and stage presence quickly made her a lead dancer, notably performing the role of 'Sita' in the renowned Ramlila productions. A significant turning point in her career was her introduction to Odissi through Guru Harekrushna Behera, who taught her 'batu nritya'. Her dedication to Odissi deepened in 1968 when she began intensive training under Guru Mayadhar Raut, a pivotal figure in the reconstruction and popularization of the Odissi dance form, first at Nritya Niketan and subsequently at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra. In 1973, Panikar made the decisive choice to focus exclusively on Odissi, resigning from the ballet unit of Bharatiya Kala Kendra to dedicate herself entirely to performing and teaching this lyrical classical style. Aloka Panikar achieved international acclaim, performing at prestigious venues and festivals such as Khajuraho, Chitrakoot, and the International Dance and Music Festival in Paris in 1973, marking her debut as a solo international artist. Her collaborations extended to academia and film, notably in 1977 when she worked with Prof. Mohan Khokar and Prof. Feruccio Marotti to produce a full-length film on Odissi for the theatre department at the University of Rome. From 1978 onwards, she made annual trips to Italy, conducting workshops and performing with the Teatro Tascabile di Bergamo, which became her international organizers. Despite a severe accident in September 1985 that left her with injuries, she continued to impart her knowledge and passion for Odissi with unwavering dedication. Based in Delhi, Guru Aloka Panikar is highly regarded as a teacher, with a lasting legacy through her numerous students, including her daughter Ambika Paniker, who continues to propagate the art form.
