Ambika Paniker is a distinguished Indian classical dancer and teacher specializing in the Odissi form. She is the daughter and a dedicated disciple of the esteemed Odissi Guru Aloka Paniker, a prominent figure in the dance world who was instrumental in establishing an Odissi dance section at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra in the early 1970s. Ambika Paniker received comprehensive training in Odissi and has since emerged as a significant practitioner and exponent of this lyrical and devotional dance style. Her career as a performer includes notable international appearances, such as her rendition of "Arabhi Pallavi," a piece choreographed by the renowned Guru Mayadhar Raut, at the Teatro Tascabile di Bergamo in Italy in 1988. Beyond her captivating performances, Ambika Paniker has dedicated a substantial part of her career to teaching, often working in close collaboration with her mother. Following a serious accident in September 1985 that left Aloka Paniker partially incapacitated, Ambika, already a proficient and trained dancer, played a crucial role in ensuring the continuity of her mother's teaching legacy and the propagation of the Odissi tradition. Ambika Paniker is highly regarded by her students, who refer to her as a "renowned Odissi exponent," underscoring her expertise and profound influence in the field. Her documented students include Supriya Nayak, an Odissi dancer who has performed widely both nationally and internationally, and Kanika Roy, who not only achieved mastery in Odissi under Guru Ambika Paniker but also continues to refine her skills under her ongoing guidance while actively teaching the dance form herself. Her contributions also extend to scholarly endeavors, as evidenced by her assistance in providing precise captions for hand and body positions for the comprehensive book "The Dance Orissi" by Mohan Khokar and Ashish Khokar, highlighting her deep understanding of the art form's intricate nuances.
