Kamal Kant is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, specifically Kathak, born into a family with an eight-generation artistic tradition. He inherited his artistic legacy from his father, Pandit Girdhari Maharaj, a renowned Kathak maestro of the Jaipur Gharana, who trained him in Kathak, music, and singing from a young age. Kamal Kant began his teaching career early at the Kathak Kendra School in Jaipur. His international career commenced in 1993 when he was invited by Ariane Mnouchkine to participate in the show “L'Inde de père en fils, de mère en fille” at the Théâtre du Soleil in France. He has since performed and collaborated with various artists from diverse cultural backgrounds across Europe, including Maguy Marin, Karine Saporta, and Patrick Gleyse. In 2008, Kamal Kant founded Triwat, an international dance school with branches in Paris and Jaipur, where he serves as the artistic director. At Triwat, he imparts his knowledge of Kathak dance and Indian music. His wife, Megha Jagawat, a professional dancer and choreographer, is also a co-founder of Triwat and has further refined her skills under his guidance. Kamal Kant has been instrumental in fostering intercultural exchanges through his work and the Shri Laxmi Narayan Nrityashram Association, which aims to preserve and promote North Indian traditional arts globally.
