Kamala Lakshman, also known as Kumari Kamala and Kamala Laxman, was a legendary Indian classical dancer, actress, choreographer, and guru, renowned as a foremost exponent of Bharatanatyam in the Vazhuvoor style. Born Kamala Lakshminarayan on June 16, 1934, in Mayuram (now Mayiladuthurai), Tamil Nadu, India, she began her dance journey at the tender age of four. Her early training included Kathak under Lachhu Maharaj in Bombay and Hindustani classical music from Shankar Rao Vyas. She made her Bharatanatyam arangetram in 1941 under Kattumannarkoil Muthukumara Pillai, and later became the prime disciple of the renowned Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai, mastering the Vazhuvoor bani known for its grace, fluidity, expressiveness, and dramatic elegance. Kamala's prodigious talent led her to a significant film career, appearing in nearly 100 Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada films from 1938 to the 1970s, including early roles in "Valibar Sangham" (1938) and "Ramanama Mahimai" (1939). She captivated audiences with her "Paampu Attam" (snake dance) in the 1944 film "Jagathalapratapan". Beyond cinema, she performed extensively on stage, including annual performances at the prestigious Music Academy in Chennai from 1941 to 1979. She became a global ambassador for Bharatanatyam, performing for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation festivities in 1953 and touring China and Japan in the late 1950s. In 1975, Kamala was awarded the Branta Professorship at Colgate University, where she taught dance and conducted research. In 1980, she moved to New York City, establishing her dance school, Shri Bharatha Kamalalaya, in Long Island. This institution became a sanctuary for aspiring dancers, both Indian and non-Indian, where she imparted the spiritual philosophy behind Indian classical movement. She pioneered innovative choreography, including full-length ballets like "Nauka Charitram" in 1963. Kamala Lakshman passed away in California at the age of 91 on November 23, 2025. Her enduring legacy continues through her students and her significant contributions to popularizing and preserving the Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam worldwide.
