Nagappa Nattuvanar is recognized as the earliest recorded forefather and patriarch of the esteemed Vazhuvoor nattuvanar lineage, a prominent school of Bharatanatyam. His family's heritage in classical Indian dance and music extends deep into history, with ancestors traditionally serving as nattuvanars (dance conductors), musicians, and ritual specialists in temple rituals for centuries. The term "Natyacharya" is associated with Nagappa Pillai, indicating his role as a revered dance master and expert in the art form. Nattuvanars were crucial figures in traditional Bharatanatyam, responsible for training dancers, conducting performances, reciting rhythmic syllables (sollukattu), and providing musical accompaniment. The Vazhuvoor tradition, which Nagappa Nattuvanar initiated, originated in the village of Vazhuvoor, located near Mayiladuturai (formerly Mayavaram) in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India. This region has historically been a significant center for the arts, with the Vazhuvoor parampara (lineage) producing numerous dance experts over generations. Nagappa Nattuvanar is specifically remembered as the grandfather of Guru Veerappa Nattuvanar, who was patronized by the Tanjore Court. His illustrious descendants also include Pitthu Nattuvanar and Samu Nattuvanar, the latter being the grandfather of the renowned Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai, who later codified and popularized the distinctive Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam.
