🪔 About
Mamata Biswas is an accomplished Indian classical Odissi dancer and teacher, dedicated to propagating the art form through the guru-shishya parampara (teacher-disciple tradition). She began her Odissi journey at a young age under the tutelage of Guru Gaur Charan Nayak in Balasore, Orissa, where she established her presence in the district and state. Her training continued under the universally acclaimed Guru Kelu Charan Mohapatra, a pivotal figure in promoting Odissi dance across India and internationally. Biswas also refined her skills under Guru Debi Basu, a prominent disciple of Guru Mohapatra known for her perfection and purity in Odissi, and Guru Aloka Kanungo, who carved a niche with her versatile style. Throughout her extensive career, Mamata Biswas has presented Odissi dance performances across India and abroad. Her notable performances include appearances at prestigious venues such as Birla Sabhaghar, Gyanmanch, Pwd Auditorium, Ashutoshmanch, and Sishirmanch in Kolkata. She has also graced stages at the International Nuclear Scientists' meet at BARC Auditorium, Navi Mumbai Music Festival, Iscon Temple Celebration, and Sanmukhanand Auditorium in Mumbai. Her international engagements include performances at the Indian Embassy Celebration in Tripoli, Libya, and Indian Embassy-sponsored programs in various cities across Turkey, including Afyon, Denizli, Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Beyond her performing career, Mamata Biswas is committed to nurturing new talent. She founded and leads Natya Niketan, a center in Navi Mumbai dedicated to teaching Odissi dance. Through her academy, she guides aspiring and budding dancers in adapting to the Odissi style with precision and grace.
