Debi Basu is a leading exponent and renowned guru of the Indian classical dance form of Odissi, celebrated for the emotive potency of her choreographies and purity of form. Born into a traditional Bengali family, she completed her schooling in Kolkata and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Gokhale College. Her keen interest in dance from childhood led her to pursue Odissi after moving to Mumbai in 1974 following her marriage to Tapan Basu. In 1980, encouraged by her husband, Basu embarked on her formal training in Odissi under the tutelage of the legendary Padmavibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. She became one of his senior disciples, immersing herself in the traditional Guru-Shishya parampara, traveling, learning, and performing alongside him. Her debut performance took place in 1982 at the Park Circus Music Conference in Kolkata, accompanying her Guru. She was also part of the Indian delegation for the 'Festival of India' in Russia in 1987, performing across the country with Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Sanjukta Panigrahi, and Kumkum Mohanty. Basu co-founded the Sanyuktam Arts Foundation (SAF) in Mumbai, an institution dedicated to promoting and perpetuating the legacy of her Guru. She continues to choreograph and teach at her school in Sri Subramania Samaj Chembur, Mumbai, and virtually to numerous international students. Her deep fascination with Sanskrit literature, mythology, and philosophy profoundly enriches her art form and teaching. She is committed to maintaining the madhyam-gati (medium-pace) and lalitya (fluidity) characteristic of her Guru's style. Her choreographic works include pallavis to Raga Madhuvanti (2008) and Ahir Bhairav (2021), as well as pieces based on Odia poet Kabisurya Baladev Rath's champu (2019) and Janana (2022).
