Nirmala Paniker is a renowned Indian Mohiniyattam dancer, choreographer, teacher, and researcher, celebrated for her significant contributions to the preservation and development of the Mohiniyattam dance form. Born on February 12, 1944, in Kovalam, Travancore (now Kerala), she began her dance training at the age of five under Guru Thottasseri Madhavan Paniker Asan in semi-classical and folk dances. She later pursued formal education in dance, completing a diploma and post-diploma in Bharatanatyam (Kalakshetra style) from RLV Fine Arts Academy, Thrippunithura, under Kalakshetra Vilasini and RLV Radhamony. At 19, she commenced her training in Mohiniyattam under the tutelage of Guru Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma, a pivotal figure in the dance form, whose style she continues to follow. Paniker also briefly trained in Kathakali, Carnatic music, Kathak, and Odissi, and received guidance in Nangiar Koothu from Guru Ammannur Madhava Chakyar and Villuvattathu Kochukutty Nangiaramma. Her career as a teacher began in 1974 when she joined The Lawrence School, Lovedale, as the Head of the Dance Department, a position she held until 2000. During her tenure, access to the school's library fueled her research into Mohiniyattam. In 1979, she founded Natanakaisiki (also known as Natana Kaisiki) in Irinjalakuda, Kerala, a research and performing center dedicated to female dance and theatre traditions of Kerala, established as an offshoot of Natanakairali, founded by her husband G. Venu. Through Natanakaisiki, Paniker has been instrumental in reviving and reintroducing traditional elements of Mohiniyattam, particularly the "desi" or regional aspects such as Poli, Kurathi, Esal, Chandanam, and Mookuthi, which were previously excluded from the repertoire. She has developed a systematic methodology for teaching Mohiniyattam, incorporating the rich Netrabhinaya and Hastabhinaya traditions of Kerala and introducing the use of Sanskrit shlokas for hand gestures. Paniker has choreographed notable works like "Geethagovinda Saptam" and an adaptation of Sree Narayana Guru's "Kundalini Paattu" for Mohiniyattam. She is also a prolific author, having written nine books on dance, including monographs on 'Nangiarkoothu' and 'Mohiniyattam, the Lyrical Dance,' and numerous research articles. Her research also explores the links between Mohiniyattam, Nangiar Koothu, Thiruvathirakkali, and ancient dance practices described in the Tamil epic Cilappatikaram.
