Sarada Hoffman, born Alladi Sarada on June 14, 1929, in Madras (now Chennai), British India, was a revered Bharatanatyam dancer and influential dance teacher. She grew up within the Theosophical Society Adyar, and when her parents moved to Madurai, Rukmini Devi Arundale took her under her wing at Kalakshetra's hostel. Affectionately known as "Chinna Sarada" to distinguish her from an elder contemporary, she embarked on her dance journey at Kalakshetra. Sarada Hoffman received comprehensive training in Bharatanatyam from stalwarts such as Rukmini Devi Arundale, Pandanallur Chokkalingam Pillai, and Mylapore Gowri Ammal. She also delved into Kathakali, learning from gurus Ambu Panicker and Chandu Panicker. Completing her studies in 1947, she was appointed as a dance teacher and a principal dancer at Kalakshetra. Initially, Hoffman performed extensively with the Kalakshetra troupe, showcasing her precision and expressive clarity. However, her primary passion and enduring legacy lay in teaching and composition. She played a pivotal role in codifying and refining the distinctive Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam, helping to standardize its teaching methodology and unify various traditional approaches into a formal curriculum. Her work laid the pedagogical foundation for Bharatanatyam at Kalakshetra, influencing generations of artists globally. Sarada Hoffman retired as the head of Kalakshetra's dance department in 1989, continuing to serve as an emerita member until 1996. She was recognized for her immense contributions to Indian classical dance with several prestigious awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1996 and the first Rukmini Devi Medal for Excellence in the Arts in 2001. She married Peter Hoffman in 1960 and had two children, Krishna and Geeta. Sarada Hoffman passed away on September 14, 2025, in California, at the age of 96.
