Saroja Kameswaran, honored with the title Natya Thilagam, was a distinguished senior Bharatanatyam guru and teacher who made significant contributions to Indian classical dance from Mylapore, Chennai, India. Her foundational training in Bharatanatyam began under Bhupal, the father of the renowned karana exponent Swarnamukhi. She later became a dedicated pupil of natyacharya S.K. Kameswaran, whom she subsequently married. Her husband, S.K. Kameswaran, was a highly successful natyacharya in Chennai from the 1960s, having received his training in Bharatanatyam and Carnatic vocal music from Mayavaram Mahadeva Pillai. He was also associated with natyacharya Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai, whose distinctive Vazhuvoor bani he deeply imbibed and adopted in his choreography and teaching. Both Saroja and S.K. Kameswaran learned from the eminent Guru Vazhuvoor Shri. Ramiah Pillai. Together, Saroja Kameswaran and S.K. Kameswaran established their Bharatanatyam institution, Sri Mahalakshmi Natyalaya, in 1968. Located on Bazaar Lane in Mylapore, the academy was named after their daughter, Mahalakshmi. The institution marked its golden jubilee with a grand celebration on September 5, 2018. Beyond her work at the academy, Saroja Kameswaran dedicated over four decades as a dance faculty member at the prestigious Rosary Matriculation School for Girls in San Thome. Generations of students at the school benefited from her teaching, with alumnae recalling her exceptional ability to introduce classical dance moves to junior classes, making her pieces central to school events. A prominent dancer in her youth, Saroja Kameswaran, alongside her husband, guided numerous students through their arangetrams. Their daughter, Mahalakshmi, followed in their footsteps as a Bharatanatyam dancer, trained by her parents and at Kalakshetra. Padmini Ramachandran (nee Padmini Priyadarshini) was another acclaimed disciple of S.K. Kameswaran. Saroja Kameswaran passed away on August 8, 2022, at the age of 79. She and her husband were recognized with many awards from various Sabhas in Madras for their extensive service to the art form. Awards & Honours: Natya Thilakam.
