Saroja Vaidyanathan (1937–2023) was an acclaimed Indian classical dancer, choreographer, guru, and a prominent exponent of Bharatanatyam. Born on September 19, 1937, in Bellary, Karnataka, she began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of seven at the Saraswati Gana Nilayam in Chennai under Guru Lalitha, a disciple of Kattumannar Muthukumaran Pillai of Thanjavur. She further honed her skills under Guru Kattumannar Muthukumaran Pillai. Complementing her dance education, Vaidyanathan pursued Carnatic music studies under Professor P. Sambamoorthy at Madras University, gaining proficiency in vocal traditions essential for Bharatanatyam performances. She also earned a D.Litt in dance from the Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, for her profound impact on classical Indian dance. After her marriage, Vaidyanathan initially gave up public performances due to conservative reactions, dedicating herself instead to teaching dance to children at home. Following her husband's transfer to Delhi in 1972, she established Ganesa Natyalaya in 1974, a prominent classical dance institution in New Delhi. The institution's building was constructed in the Qutab Institutional Area in 1988. As a revered guru at Ganesa Natyalaya, she mentored hundreds of students over five decades, emphasizing a rigorous and holistic curriculum. By 2017, her students had completed over 270 arangetrams (debut solo performances). Vaidyanathan was a prolific choreographer, creating nearly 2,000 individual Bharatanatyam pieces and ten full-length ballets. She authored several influential books on dance and music, including "The Classical Dances of India" and "Bharatanatyam – An In-Depth Study." Her contributions to Indian classical dance were recognized with numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan in 2013. Saroja Vaidyanathan passed away in New Delhi on September 21, 2023, at the age of 86, after battling cancer.
