Saroja Vaidyanathan (1937–2023) was an acclaimed Indian classical dancer, choreographer, guru, and a prominent exponent of Bharatanatyam. Born on September 19, 1937, in Bellary, Karnataka, she received her initial Bharatanatyam training at the Saraswati Gana Nilayam in Chennai under Guru Lalitha, a disciple of Kattumannar Muthukumaran Pillai of Thanjavur. She further honed her skills under Guru Kattumannar Muthukumaran Pillai. Vaidyanathan also pursued Carnatic music studies under Professor P. Sambamoorthy at Madras University and earned a D.Litt in dance from the Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh. After her marriage, she initially paused public performances due to societal norms but continued teaching dance to children at home. Following her husband's transfer to Delhi in 1972, she established the Ganesa Natyalaya in 1974, which became the first dedicated Bharatanatyam institute in the capital. The institution, whose building was constructed in the Qutab Institutional Area in 1988, aimed to provide a holistic understanding of Bharatanatyam by also teaching Tamil, Hindi, and Carnatic vocal music. Vaidyanathan was a prolific choreographer, creating ten full-length ballets and nearly two thousand individual Bharatanatyam pieces. Her work blended traditional Bharatanatyam with themes from Indian mythology, history, and culture. She authored several influential books on Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music, including "The Classical Dances of India," "Bharatanatyam – An In-Depth Study," "Carnataka Sangeetham," and "The Science of Bharatanatyam." She also compiled an encyclopedia on Bharatanatyam for NCERT. Her career spanned over five decades, during which she led cultural tours, including one to Southeast Asia in 2002 accompanying Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. She was instrumental in training generations of dancers, including her daughter-in-law Rama Vaidyanathan and granddaughter Dakshina Vaidyanathan Baghel, both renowned Bharatanatyam artists. Saroja Vaidyanathan passed away on September 21, 2023, in New Delhi, leaving a significant legacy in Indian classical dance.
