Swarnamalya Ganesh, born on April 22, 1981, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, is a distinguished Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, scholar, actress, and television anchor. She commenced her Bharatanatyam training at the age of three under Kalaimamani K.J. Sarasa, a guru from a hereditary devadasi lineage and a disciple of Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai. Her training also includes studies with the Thiruvalaputhur Kalyani Grand Daughters, Gopalakrishna Nattuvanar, Viralimalai Muthukannamal, and Bhagavatulu Sri. B. Seetharama Sharma of Kalakshetra. Academically, Ganesh holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, a Master of Arts in Bharatanatyam, and a Ph.D. in Dance History from the University of Madras. Her doctoral research focused on the reconstruction of lost dance repertoires from the Nayak period of early modern South India. She further pursued post-doctoral research as a Fulbright-Nehru Fellow for Academic and Professional Excellence at UCLA. As a performing artist, Ganesh has delivered solo Bharatanatyam and Sadir performances at prominent festivals globally. She founded "The Madras Sadir Company" to revive subaltern Bharatanatyam traditions and is the director of "Ranga Mandira School of Performing Arts" (also known as Ranga Mandira Academy of World Dance/Performance and Indic Studies) in Chennai, which she established over a decade ago. She teaches courses on performing practices and women in performance at institutions like Krea University and serves as a visiting faculty for the Department of Indian Music, University of Madras. Beyond dance, she is known for her acting roles in Tamil films such as *Alaipayuthey* and *Mozhi*, and as a television anchor. Ganesh has also been a prominent advocate in the #MeToo movement within Indian classical arts. Her notable work includes the performance-exhibition-lecture series titled "From The Attic," which delves into past performing practices and the evolutionary nature of Sadir (Bharatanatyam).
