Guru Smt. Vinitha Subramanian is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, primarily known for her contributions to Bharatanatyam as a performer, teacher, guru, choreographer, and institution head. Her dance journey commenced at the tender age of four under the tutelage of Thirukoshtiyur Nagarathna Ammal. She further honed her skills in the Thirukoshtiyur and Pandanainallur styles, receiving training from Shri Radhakrishnan of Bangalore and Madurai S. Jayaraman. Additionally, she undertook a year of Kathakali training under Shri Manoharan. Her earliest teacher was her sister, Sujatha Krishna, and her last teacher was Jayaraman of Madurai, from whom she derived a passion for choreography and emoting. After relocating to Texas, USA, Vinitha Subramanian founded the Natyalaya School of Dance in 1982, initially in Temple, TX, and began teaching in Austin the same year. Natyalaya has since grown to become the longest-standing and largest classical dance school in the central Texas area, with over 150 students and branches in North Austin, Round Rock, Leander, and East Austin. Under her direction, the school has guided numerous students through margam training and arangetrams. She has also choreographed and produced several dance dramas, including “Agasthya,” “Prahala Bhakthi Vijayam,” “Nauka Charitram,” “Two Faces of Shiva,” “Aaru Padai Veedu,” “Raja Rajeshwari,” “Ganga – A River's Story,” and “Navahavarna – Colors of Number Nine.” Vinitha Subramanian is also the president of the Indian Dance Endeavor of Austin (IDEA), a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Indian arts.
