Vyjayanthimala Bali, born on August 13, 1933, in Chennai (then Madras), Tamil Nadu, is a celebrated Indian parliamentarian, dancer, and former actress, widely regarded as the first female superstar of Indian Cinema. Her grandmother, Yadugiri Devi, was her initial mentor, fostering her early passion for Bharatanatyam. Vyjayanthimala began performing at a young age, notably for Pope Pius XII in Vatican City in 1940 when she was seven years old. She received rigorous training in Bharatanatyam under esteemed gurus such as Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai and K.P. Kittappa Pillai, adhering to the Vazhuvoor tradition and Thanjavur bani. Additionally, she trained in Carnatic music under renowned masters including D. K. Pattammal and K. V. Narayanaswamy. Her film career commenced at 16 with the Tamil film 'Vaazhkai' in 1949. Vyjayanthimala revolutionized Indian cinema by seamlessly integrating classical Bharatanatyam into her performances, elevating dance to an integral storytelling element. After a successful two-decade career in films, she retired in 1968 following her marriage to Dr. C.L. Bali, dedicating herself entirely to her primary passion for dance. She established a dance research institute focused on preserving traditional temple art forms and promoting Bharatanatyam's rich legacy. She serves as the Life President and Trustee of Natyalaya Academy of Classical Bharatanatyam and Music in Chennai. Vyjayanthimala has performed globally, including at the United Nations' 20th Anniversary Celebrations of Human Rights Day in 1969. Beyond her artistic endeavors, she also had a distinguished political career, serving multiple terms as a Member of Parliament in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. She continues to perform, choreograph, compose, research, and mentor young students, maintaining her artistic discipline well into her nineties.
