Neena Gulati, an acclaimed Indian classical dancer, teacher, and choreographer, was born in New Delhi, India, and began her dance journey at the age of four. She initially studied Kathak before transitioning to Bharatanatyam in Mumbai, mastering the Pandanallur style. Gulati performed her arangetram at the Fine Arts Theater in New Delhi in 1961. Her talent led to an invitation to perform at the United Nations General Assembly on Human Rights Day in 1964. In 1967, Ms. Gulati moved to the United States, where she has since become a pioneer in bringing Indian classical dance to New England. In April 1971, she founded the Triveni School of Dance in Brookline, Massachusetts, the first Indian classical dance school in the region. Through Triveni, she teaches Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and Kuchipudi, fostering the guru-shishya tradition and emphasizing the cultural and spiritual aspects of the art forms. She has taught thousands of students, with over sixty having completed their arangetrams. Ms. Gulati has performed extensively across the United States and in England, including at numerous universities and functions. She has also taught at Brown University and served as a guest artist at several New England universities, giving lecture-demonstrations. She is known for her collaborations with artists of different disciplines, including poet Robert Bly, and for choreographing dance dramas. Her contributions to the dance landscape have earned her significant recognition, including the 2016 Dr. Michael Shannon Dance Champion award from the Boston Dance Alliance and the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from INDIA New England News.
