🪔 About

Anuradha Nehru is an internationally recognized and award-winning Kuchipudi dancer, teacher, and choreographer, celebrated for her artistry and vision in promoting Indian classical dance in the United States. She received her foundational training in Kuchipudi from the legendary Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam, founder of the Kuchipudi Art Academy in Chennai, India. Her training also encompassed Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi under Guru Krishna Kumar, Guru Guruswamy, and Guru Pakiriswamy Pillai. Nehru performed worldwide as the principal dancer with Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam's troupe from 1996 to 2002. In 1991, Anuradha Nehru founded Kalanidhi Dance (also known as Kuchipudi Kalanidhi), a non-profit organization and school based in Bethesda, Maryland, dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and education of Kuchipudi dance. Under her leadership as founder and artistic director emerita, Kalanidhi Dance has grown into one of the leading Indian classical dance schools and performing companies in the United States, touring across the country, Southeast Asia, and India. She has taught dance for over thirty years in the United States, shaping new generations of Kuchipudi dancers. Nehru is known for her innovative choreographic works, which explore creative and contemporary ideas while retaining the essence of the classical form. Her major productions include 'Rasa,' 'Transcending Traditions,' 'Bhagmati,' 'Why We Dance,' 'Poetry of Love,' and 'Bhoomi'. She has also collaborated with Opera Lafayette on three operatic works: "Lalla Roukh" (2013), "Les Fetes de L'Hymen et de L'Amour" (2014), and "The Enchanted Forest" (2017/2018). Anuradha Nehru is also a founding member and former Chairperson of the Indian Dance Educators' Association (IDEA). Awards & Honours: Master/Apprentice grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, Teacher Recognition Certificate from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, Montgomery County Executive's Outstanding Artist Award for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities (2016), Pola Nirenska award for Outstanding Achievements in Dance (2020), Heritage Award (2025).
