Dhirendra Nath Pattnaik (1933-2009) was a pivotal figure in the revival and formal recognition of Odissi dance as a classical art form. Born in Bonai, Odisha, in 1933, he received his early dance training from teachers such as Dinabandhu Majhi, Bir Hanuman Shastri, and Padmanavadas. Pattnaik, alongside Dr. Priyambada Mohanty Hejmadi, made history as one of the first onstage performers of Odissi at the Inter University Youth Festival in New Delhi in 1954, an event that brought the dance form to wider attention. Recognizing the need for standardization and promotion, Pattnaik was instrumental in co-founding 'Jayantika' (the All Orissa Dancers' and Dance Teachers' Association) in 1957, serving as its Vice-President. This association played a crucial role in unifying different dance gurus' approaches to Odissi. His administrative contributions extended to various significant institutions; he headed the research department of Kala Vikash Kendra in Cuttack and was the Founder-Principal of the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar, where he established structured educational programs for artists. From 1980 to 1991, he served as the Secretary of the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi, overseeing and enhancing support for performing arts across the state. He also founded the Mayur Art Centre in Bhubaneswar. A prolific writer, Pattnaik authored 'Odissi Nrutya,' the first major book documenting and analyzing the Odissi dance form in Oriya, later translated into English as 'Odissi Dance.' His scholarly works extended to other traditional art forms of Odisha, including Chhau dance and Prahlad Natak, contributing significantly to their preservation and promotion. He also undertook the translation of classical texts like Natya Shastra, Abhinaya Chandrika, and Abhinaya Darpanam. Dhirendra Nath Pattnaik passed away on January 1, 2009, at his residence in Cuttack at the age of 75, leaving behind a profound legacy in Indian classical dance.
